Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I grew up on the West Side, attended Humboldt high school and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in International Relations. Heidi and I married in 1996 and moved to Crystal in 1997. We started our family in 2001. I enjoy golf, canoeing, the BWCA, reading, metalsmithing, and hanging out with my kids.
I come from a large family. We were taught to always work together and learn to resolve our differences in a way that benefited everyone. A memory that stands out for me is when I was about 10 years old and my dad gave me some change to buy a bottle of pop. Of course it had the stipulation that I share it with all my brothers and sisters. Even though I only got every 5th sip, it was a treat and something I knew to appreciate. It turned into a game and a fun way to spend a little time with my family sitting on the front steps in the summer.
Growing up in the 60's helped me value the power of the grassroots political movement. It seared into my core how important it is for me to be involved, to use my voice as a conduit for those who are being silenced and to create a space for doing the right thing. To me, doing the right thing means taking care of our neighbors, embracing differences, and keeping those vulnerable in our world safe from harm; protected, fed, warm, and connected to their community.
